Brantford Red Sox Announce Field Manager

The Brantford Red Sox, members of the Intercounty Baseball League, are proud to announce that Matt McGovern will be taking on the position of Field Manager for the upcoming season.

Matt McGovern has spent the past 10 years in the Intercounty Baseball League. Matt’s IBL career began with the Ottawa Fat Cats from 2010-2012.  He appeared in the 2011 IBL Finals vs. Brantford, notching a win and pitching 18 shutout innings in the series.  Matt spent the next 5 seasons with the Kitchener Panthers, which included 2 more trips to the IBL Finals. 

Matt joined the Brantford Red Sox in 2018, where his versatility as a pitcher, fielder, and batter has been a valuable asset to the team.  Last year in addition to his on field role, Matt took on the challenge of a leadership position when he stepped in as co-Field Manager midseason. 

"It's going to be a big change for me from playing everyday to taking on the responsibility of coaching the Red Sox", says McGovern. "I never thought my first real coaching opportunity would be in the IBL, but I have been in this league long enough now to know what it's going to take to turn this club into a winning one on the field as well as making sure they succeed on the field".

“The Brantford Red Sox organization congratulates Matt on his new role as Field Manager", says team owner Rick Pomerleau.  "Matt has shown strong leadership since being acquired in 2018.  He has a great deal of knowledge about the IBL and its players."

"I am fortunate that Rick and Connie Pomerleau have given me the chance to lead this team for the 2020 season", McGovern added. "We have been working extremely hard this off season, and I'm confident we will surprise the other teams in this league. I can guarantee 3 things: we are going to compete at a high level every game, we are going to put in the work it takes off the field to better ourselves, and we are going to be in every game this year until the very last inning!"
