Brantford Red Sox Week 6 Wrap Up

by B. Young

FRIDAY JUNE 23 - WELLAND JACKFISH 19 BRANTFORD RED SOX 7

For the majority of Friday night's game vs. Welland (12-2), it looked like underdog Brantford (2-13) had an upset brewing. The Sox led the first place Fish 7-5 after 7 innings, largely on the back of another incredible start by Isaiah Ramos. But after a 117 pitch performance which saw Ramos strike out 10, Brantford would need its bullpen to hold the line. Brantford's depleted bullpen could not rise to the occasion unfortunately, with Welland putting up 10 runs in the 8th en route to a 19-7 win.

Gus Wilson led the way the plate going 3 for 4 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI. Evan Ryan hit a pinch hit home run in the 7th inning. Jeremie Veilleux, Kieran Bowles, Taichi Nakamura, and Jesse Fishbaum each contributed a pair of hits.

Saturday June 24 - Toronto Maple Leafs AT Brantford Red Sox RAINED OUT

On Saturday night Brantford lost to a new opponent - Mother Nature. Ongoing weather and field conditions closed Arnold Anderson Stadium for the day. Make up game information will be announced soon.

SUNDAY JUNE 25 - BRANTFORD RED SOX 8 HAMILTON CARDINALs 9

Brantford wrapped their shortened weekend in Hamilton, sending Jeremias Sucre to the mound to face the Cardinals. After the home side jumped to an early 2-0 lead Brantford responded with a run in the 3rd inning and four more in the 4th to grab a 5-2 lead. But Sucre would struggle with his control in the bottom of the 4th, giving up a series of hits capped off by a Cardinals 3 run blast allowing them to retake an 8-5 lead.

Brantford answered back in the 5th, led off by a Kieran Bowles solo shot and cutting Hamilton's lead to 8-7. After the Cardinals made it a 9-7 game, the Sox led off the ninth inning with a pair of hits. Despite having the go ahead run at the plate with no outs, Brantford was only able to score a single run - the tying run was thrown out at the plate to end the game. Hamilton hangs on in dramatic fashion for the 9-8 lead.

Despite the loss, this was perhaps Brantford's most promising game in recent weeks. Each member of the starting lineup had at least one hit, with Jeremie Veilleux leading the way going 4 for 6 against his former squad. Brantford's defence also made zero errors. And Danny Howat turned in another stellar relief appearance, yielding 0 runs on just 1 hit in 3 innings of work.
