Brantford Red Sox at Barrie Baycats

Tuesday July 16, 2019 - Coates Stadium, Barrie

Despite the Intercounty Baseball League regular season being nearly 3/4 of the way completed, the Brantford Red Sox and Barrie Baycats had only faced off once so far this year.  The two teams are scheduled to catch up this week however, with the Sox travelling to Barrie for the first of three games vs. the Baycats in the next 5 days (Note: Brantford's game hosting Barrie on July 17 was rained out)

Brantford jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, with Jesse Fishbaum hitting a leadoff double, then stealing third, then coming home on a balk. Brantford led 1-0 until the 3rd inning, when Barrie would tie it up.

Brantford retook the lead in the 5th inning, with Fishbaum driving in Nick Zarzycki, and Luis Perez bringing home Anthony Rizquez. Brantford shortly led 3-1, with the Baycats once again tying the game in the bottom of the inning.

Brantford broke the tie in the 7th inning, with Perez driving in Fishbaum.  Brantford's 4-3 lead would again be shortlived however, with the Baycats squaring things up 4-4 in the bottom of the inning.

Brantford fired back in the 8th.  The Baycats went to their bullpen, and the Sox proceeded to load the bases (Nick Burdett hit by pitch, Chris Iltshishin double, Jacob Reid hit by pitch).  Austin Wilkie then came to the plate and made the most of the situation, hitting a grand slam. Brantford led 8-4 in the 8th inning.

Red Sox pitching and defence would finally prevent the Baycats from answering back, and Brantford takes the first of this week's trilogy with Barrie 8-4.

Brantford starting pitcher Mike Bannon went 5 innings, allowing 3 runs on 3 hits.  Mike Mueller pitched 3 and 1/3 innings in relief, surrendering 1 run on 5 hits, notching the win.  Matt McGovern secured the final two outs to close out the game.

Brantford's bats were led by Luis Perez with 2 hits and 2 RBIs, Anthony Rizquez with 2 hits, and Austin Wilkie with a huge grand slam.

Brantford is on the road Friday night in London at 7:35pm, and back to Barrie Saturday night at 7pm.
