July 27 - Red Sox at Royals
Brantford Red Sox at Guelph Royals
Saturday July 27, 2019 - Hastings Stadium, Guelph
The Brantford Red Sox headed up Highway 24 for a rare Saturday night road game in the Royal City, and managed to spoil Guelph's Fan Fest with a win.
Brantford's bats started out early. Gianfranco Morello hit what was initially ruled a home run, then changed to a ground-rule double upon discussion by the officials. Dougie Parks advanced to first on an error, bringing Nick Burdett to the plate. Burdett doubled in Morello and Parks, and the Sox took an early 2-0 lead in the 1st inning.
The score would hold until Brantford added to their lead in the 6th inning. Burdett led off with a single. After Chris Iltshishin moved Burdett over to second base, the Royals opted to intentionally walk Luis Perez. Austin Wilkie then walked (unintentionally) to load the bases. Anthony Rizquez capitalized with a choppy infield hit that ate up Guelph's defenders and allowed both Burdett and Perez to score. Brantord now led 5-0.
2 innings later, Brantford would apply more pressure and capitalize on 4 Guelph errors, adding on a pair of insurance runs. Brantford took a 7-0 lead into the 9th inning. Guelph managed to score a pair before Brantford closed things out with a 7-2 win.
Brantford Red Sox starter Victor Mueses was rock solid, allowing 0 runs on just 2 hits and striking out 8 over 5 innings. Mike Bannon pitched a hitless and scoreless 6th and 7th inning. Eric Lindsay threw a scoreless 8th, including an impressive strikeout of all-time IBL home run king Sean Reilly. And Mike Mueller closed out the 9th for the Sox.
Noteable for Brantford - the Sox made zero errors on the night. Pitching, bats and defence all came together to secure Brantford's 5th win of the season.
Brantford has 2 home games remaining in the last week of the IBL regular season - Tuesday July 30 hosting the Barrie Baycats, and Friday August 2 hosting the London Majors. Both games are at Arnold Anderson Stadium with an 8 pm start time.
