Brantford Red Sox at Guelph Royals

Saturday June 8, 2019 - Hastings Stadium, Guelph

The Brantford Red Sox headed up Highway 24 to Guelph to take on the Royals.  This was Brantford's first trip to Guelph and the second meeting of the clubs this season, with Guelph winning the first encounter 7-2.

Edison Frias took the mound, making his first start for the Brantford Red Sox.  After a scoreless first inning where Frias struck out 2, Guelph led off the scoring in the second inning plating 2. But Brantford would answer back at their next opportunity. Jacob Reid singled, and would then be replaced on base by Luis Perez on a fielder's choice.  Jesse Fishbaum was then hit by a pitch, bringing up Nick Burdett with 2 baserunners on. Burdett would take full advantage, driving a pitch deep over the right field fence.  Red Sox led 3-2 after 3 innings.

Guelph would tie the game in the 4th, and score a go ahead run in the 5th. But the Sox would quickly fire back in the 6th. Fishbaum and Burdett both walked to start off the inning. Fernando Suarez .replaced Fishbaum on base on a fielder's choice. Then Chris Iltshishin cleared the bases with a double, bringing home both Burdett and Suarez (with a huge hustle and dive to beat the tag at home). Red Sox led 5-4 in the middle of the 6th inning.

Guelph tied things up in the bottom of the 6th. Victor Mueses then entered in the relief in the 7th and held Guelph scoreless.  The game was tied 5-5 heading into the 8th inning and it looked like the Red Sox may be on pace to enter their third extra innings game of the season. Sox stranded 2 in the top of the inning, but the Royals managed to break things open in the bottom of the 8th.

Guelph got runners in scoring position thanks in part to a walk, hit by pitch, and wild pitch.  Familiar face David Mendham (who played in 2018 with Brantford and is briefly back in the IBL this week before playing summer ball in the US) then singled in the go ahead run. Guelph would tack on 3 more insurance runs before the inning was through.  Brantford was unable to respond in the 9th, making your final score Guelph 9 Brantford 5.

Nick Burdett led Brantford's offence with his 3 run home run plus a run scored on a walk. Chris Iltshishin had 2 hits and 2 RBIs, and Jacob Reid also contributed a hit.

Edison Frias struck out 9 over 6 innings pitched in his Red Sox debut.
