Guelph Royals at Brantford Red Sox - 2019 Home Opener

May 19, 2019 - Arnold Anderson Stadium, Brantford

The Brantford Red Sox hosted the Guelph Royals in our 2019 home opener.  This was the Sox's 2nd attempt at playing the home opener, with last week's attempt being cancelled due to weather.  The temperature was more favourable this time around, but the warm weather also brought strong swirling winds with it that plagued both teams all afternoon long.

Victor Mueses took the mound making his first start for the Red Sox.  Guelph jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Sox managed to avoid further damage getting out of the inning leaving the bases loaded with Royals.  1-0 Guelph after the first inning.

Both teams then settled in to a defensive back and forth battle, with no further scoring until the 5th inning. Guelph scored 2 in their half of the inning (with an assist to the winds previously mentioned), but Brantford answered back.  After an Anthony Rizquez leadoff walk, Nick Burdett moved him over with a double. Fernando Suarez then drove Rizquez in. Jesse Fishbaum then loaded the bases on an error, and next batter Nick Zarzycki brought Burdett home on a fielder's choice. Score was 3-2 Royals after 5 innings.

After Guelph tacked on another run in the 7th, they broke things open in the 9th inning with 3 more runs.  Brantford was unable to answer back, making your final score 7-2 Guelph.

Chris Iltshishin led the Sox bats with a pair of hits. Anthony Rizquez contributed a hit plus 3 walks and a stolen base.  Red Sox stranded 10 base runners on the day and were charged with 5 errors.
