Quarterfinals Game 1: Red Sox at Baycats
Brantford Red Sox at Barrie Baycats
Intercounty Baseball League Quarterfinals, Game 1
Thursday August 8, 2019 - Coates Stadium, Barrie
Brantford and Barrie have had some classic postseason showdowns over the past decade. This time around, the Red Sox are hoping to play spoiler and thwart Barrie's attempt to tie Brantford's record 6 straight IBL championships.
The Red Sox didn't do themselves any favours to start the game. After going 3 up 3 down in the top of the first, Brantford committed 2 errors in the bottom of the inning contributing to 3 Barrie runs. Baycats led 3-0 after 1 inning.
Barrie's bats continued to attack Red Sox starter Abel De Los Santos in the 2nd inning. The Baycats added another 4 runs on 5 hits before Jesse Fishbaum gunned down Barrie DH Kyle DeGrace at the plate to get out of the inning. Baycats led 7-0 after 2 innings.
De Los Santos and the Brantford defence then settled down, recording two 3 up 3 down innings in the 3rd and 4th. Unfortunately the offence didn't take advantage, and Brantford still trailed 7-0 after 4 innings.
Brantford threatened in the top of the 5th, but stranded Chris Iltshishin on third. The Red Sox defence then managed to shut down a Baycats threat in the bottom of the inning, turning an infield fly into a double play. Baycats still led 7-0 after 5 innings.
After a scoreless 6th, Brantford finally reached the scoreboard in the 7th inning. Gianfranco Morello doubled to lead off the inning, then caught the Baycats sleeping and stole 3rd as Dougie Parks walked. Nick Burdett then drove in Morello, cutting the Baycats' lead to 7-1 at the 7th inning stretch.
Mike Bannon came on in relief in the bottom of the 7th and got into trouble, walking the bases loaded. Connor Morrow then made the Red Sox pay with a grand slam. Barrie would tack on one more before Brantford managed to escape. Baycats led 12-1 after 7 innings.
After a scoreless 8th, Brantford added on a run in the 9th but was unable to rally any further, making 12-2 the final score. Barrie leads the best of seven series 1-0.
Game 2 goes Saturday in Barrie at 7pm before the series shifts back to Brantford for games 3 and 4:
