Brantford Red Sox vs. Barrie Baycats

Intercounty Baseball League Quarterfinals, Game 3

Sunday August 11, 2019 - Arnold Anderson Stadium, Brantford

The Red Sox and Baycats’ best of seven Quaterfinals series shifted back to Brantford, with the Sox down 2-0 and hoping that home field would yield an advantage.

Brantford was dealt a disadvantage, however, in the form of a severely depleted roster. Jesse Fishbaum, better known as the team’s left fielder and number 2 hitter, took the mound in an attempt to thwart the Baycats bats.

It would be Brantford’s bats that started up early. Austin Wilkie led off the first inning with a single, then advanced to third on a stolen base and wild pitch. Dougie Parks, in his final game for Brantford before having to return stateside, then reached base on a Barrie error as Wilkie scored. Nick Burdett, appearing in tonight’s lineup as the second baseman, then doubled in Parks. Chris Iltshishin, the right fielder in the modified lineup, then drove in Burdett.  Brantford jumped put to an early 3-0 lead.

Fishbaum, defying the odds and backed up by the Red Sox defence, would toss four innings of scoreless ball. Brantford got their fielder turned pitcher an additional run in the 4th inning, and Brantford led 4-0 after 4 innings.

Barrie finally managed to reached the scoreboard in the top of the 5th, courtesy a Jordan Castaldo 2-run homer. But Brantford responded right back with a pair of their own. Brantford led 6-2 after 5 innings.

The Baycats bats finally exploded in the 6th. Errors & walks helped load the bases, and Barrie cashed in 2 unearned runs. Michael Bannon, the only other available pitcher, then entered in relief. After a hit by pitch reloaded the bases, Kyle DeGrace made the Sox pay with a grand slam. Barrie took the lead 9-6 in the 6th inning.

Brantford’s bats were unable to respond for the remainder of the game. Barrie added on an insurance run in the 9th for a 10-6 final.  Barrie now leads the best of 7 series 3-0.

Game 4 of the series goes Tuesday night at Arnold Anderson Stadium in Brantford, with the Red Sox facing elimination. Game time is 8 pm.
