Sox Have One Slip Away In Welland

by B. Young

The Brantford Red Sox headed to Welland for their first road game of the year, and a rematch of their 2021 season opener vs. the Jackfish.

Brantford came out swinging in the Rose City, bringing 7 batters to the plate in the first inning and quickly jumping to a 3-0 lead.  The Sox added on a run in the third, bringing their lead to 4-0 over the Jackfish.  Jesse Fishbaum hit his first home run of the year, a solo blast in the top of the 4th, extending Brantford's lead to 5-1.

Brantford starter Kyle Lev worked his way through some control issues early on with a trio of hit batters, a wild pitch, and five walks before surrendering a grand slam in the bottom of the 4th, putting Welland ahead 6-5 after 4 innings.

Weird Red Sox rally in the top of the 7th - with 2 runners on and 2 outs Nick Burdett hit a fly ball that dropped a foot inside the line, but was erroneously called foul on the field. After the umpires conferred the call was overturned  and Matt Pilarczyk scored.  Colton Fountain then drove in Liam Sutherland and the Red Sox regained the lead, 7-6 over the Jackfish in the 7th.

Welland quickly responded in the bottom of the 7th however. After loading the bases the Jackfish capitalized on a wild pitch to retake the lead 8-7. They would tack on a pair of insurance runs in the 8th and the Red Sox could not respond. Final score Welland Jackfish 10, Brantford Red Sox 7.

Liam Sutherland led Brantford's offence with 3 hits, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Colton Fountain also contributed a pair of hits and 2 RBIs, while Gianfranco Morello had 2 hits and 2 runs scored. Adam Jafine pitched 2 scoreless innings in his Red Sox debut, striking out 3.
