Red Sox at Welland. - Game 1 (Part 2)

by B. Young

WELLAND - When we last left Game 1 on Thursday night, rain had suspended play at the start of the 7th inning with Welland leading 8-4 (IBL playoff rules state that all games must be played to completion - games are not "official" after 5 innings as they are during the regular season). You can read the recap from Thursday night's part of this game here.

Brantford picked right up where they left off on Friday night's Game 2 unfortunately- aka the top of the lineup not hitting. Bowles/Wilson/Kumemka went 3 up 3 down, and turned the game over to the defence and Nick Davies, opening up the resumed game on the mound. Davies got 2 quick outs, followed by a walk and a single, but then induced an inning-ending ground ball to stop the Welland threat. Score remained 8-4 after 7 innings.

More of the same from Brantford's bats in the 8th, another 3 up 3 down inning. Hopefully the Red Sox are saving their pop at the plate for Game 3 later on, because the offence set a bad tone to start the day in the resumed game. Meanwhile Welland was on their way - bunting, stealing , and running up the score as they love to do. Brantford drops the now complete Game 1 by a 12-4 final score.

Matt Fabian, Gus Wilson, Nick Burdett, and Cris Ruiz each had a pair of hits in the overall game. Danny Howat gets dinged with the loss. Kyle Nash, Aiden Armitage, and Hayden Stam all pitched scoreless relief.

Brantford needs to turn things around quickly, as Game 3 takes place right after this game.  The Red Sox must win to extend the series and their season. If Brantford is somehow successful, Game 4 will take place in Brantford Sunday at 2 pm.
