Red Sox Make CBL History with Doubleheader Sweep on Brantford Neighbourhood Association Day

It was a picture-perfect Sunday for baseball as the Brantford Red Sox welcomed fans to the ballpark for Brantford Neighbourhood Association Day, celebrating the people and communities that help make the city of Brantford special.

Beautiful weather, a great crowd, and plenty of action on the field made for a memorable afternoon, but the Red Sox gave fans one more reason to remember the day.

With 5-2 and 10-1 victories over the Chatham-Kent Barnstormers, Brantford became the first team in CBL history to sweep both games of a doubleheader.

Game 1: Irvine Goes the Distance in 5-2 Win

The historic afternoon began with an outstanding performance from Connor Irvine, who took the ball for Game 1 and never gave it back.

Irvine delivered a complete-game performance, pitching all seven innings and holding Chatham-Kent to just two runs. He finished his outing in style, retiring the Barnstormers in order in the seventh to seal Brantford's 5-2 victory.

After the Barnstormers took a 2-0 advantage, the Red Sox battled back and eventually moved ahead. Lucas Lefebvre helped spark the offense with a double in the fourth before Walker Hultgren brought him home with an RBI single, pushing Brantford in front 3-2.

Brantford added to its lead in the fifth. Jakob Cantor singled and used his speed to reach third before Chris Ortega drove him home with an RBI single to right, making it 4-2.

The Red Sox weren't finished. Lefebvre reached again in the sixth before stealing second, and Lucas Bateman followed with a single. Cantor then brought Lefebvre home to provide another insurance run and extend the lead to 5-2.

With the offense doing its part, Irvine handled the rest. He worked around baserunners throughout the afternoon and continued to produce key outs, including a fifth-inning strikeout to escape the frame and a sixth-inning double play before finishing the complete game in the seventh.

One win down. One more to make history.

Game 2: Red Sox Offense Explodes in 10-1 Victory

If Game 1 belonged to the pitching staff, Game 2 showcased just how dangerous the Red Sox offense can be.

Brantford started building its lead early, with Chris Ortega right in the middle of the action. After doubling in the opening inning and later coming around to score, Ortega added another big swing in the third, launching a solo home run to left field to extend the Red Sox advantage to 2-0.

The offense continued to roll in the fifth. Ortega drove in AJ Karosas with an RBI single to center field before Andrew Savage added another run with a sacrifice fly, helping Brantford build a commanding 5-0 lead.

The Barnstormers managed to get one run back in the sixth, but the Red Sox responded emphatically in the seventh.

Ortega brought home another run with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-1 before the inning turned into one of the biggest offensive moments of the season. With Andrew Savage, Brody Black, and Jakob Cantor aboard, Francisco Martinez stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and launched a grand slam to right field, clearing the bases and blowing the game open at 10-1.

The grand slam capped off a huge offensive performance for Brantford, while Ortega’s production throughout the game helped set the tone long before the final inning.

Jose Arias handled the bottom of the seventh, including a strikeout, to close out the 10-1 victory and officially complete the historic doubleheader sweep.

A Beautiful Day for Brantford Baseball

The results made Sunday historic, but the afternoon was about more than two wins.

The Red Sox were proud to celebrate Brantford Neighbourhood Association Day, bringing members of the community together for an afternoon at the ballpark. With beautiful summer weather providing the backdrop, fans were treated to two games and plenty of memorable moments from beginning to end.

From Irvine going the distance in Game 1 to the offense taking over in Game 2, the Red Sox found two very different ways to win.

And when Francisco Martinez's grand slam helped put the finishing touches on the second victory, Brantford had officially accomplished something no other CBL club had done before.

Two games. Two wins. One historic Sunday.

The first doubleheader sweep in CBL history made an already special community celebration even better and gave Red Sox fans another memorable moment from the 2026 season.
