Brantford Red Sox Mourn Walter Gretzky

by Bryan Young

The Brantford Red Sox mourn the loss of Canada's Hockey Dad and Brantford's Lord Mayor Walter Gretzky.  His son Wayne announced his father's passing on social media on Thursday.

Walter co-owned the Brantford Red Sox from 1985 to 1991.  He continued to be a fan of the team and a fixture at Brantford Red Sox games, always taking time to chat with fans and players.

Walter was a pillar of the Brantford community, coaching locally for years and lending his name and time to tournaments on top of his vast charitable endeavours.  He was named to the Order of Canada in 2007, and proclaimed honorary Lord Mayor of Brantford in 2006.

The Brantford Red Sox will honour Walter's Gretzky's memory during this upcoming Intercounty Baseball League season.

The Brantford Expositor will pay tribute to Mr. Gretzky fully in Saturday’s edition of the newspaper.
