Brantford Bounces Back With 8-1 Win

by B. Young

The Brantford Red Sox were in the midst of a 5 games in 6 days stretch on Wednesday night when they hosted  the Barrie Baycats. This was the second game in a home-and-home series, with the two teams having met Tuesday night in Barrie with the Baycats winning 7-3.

Brantford came out swinging on both offence and defence right from the start on this night and would not look back. After shutting down Barrie with bases loaded in the top of the first with a big inning-ending double play, the Red Sox got on their bats.  Brantford brought 12 batters to the plate in the first inning, chasing Barrie's starter from the game before he could record a single out, and capitalized on walks, errors, and hit to scored 8. This is all that the Sox would need on the night and your final score was Brantford Red Sox 8 Barrie Baycats 1.

Designated hitter Nick Burdett led the charge for Brantford, with 2 hits (including a double that was inches away from clearing the right field fence), 2 RBIs and 1 run scored. Colton Fountain and Gianfranco Morello each also contributed a pair of hits with 1 run scored. Also notable that each of Brantford's 8 runs were scored by 8 different players in a big team victory.

Starter Mike Mueller earned the win in a solid outing for the Sox, pitching 7 complete innings and striking out 7 while yielding only 1 run. Matt McGovern also pitched 2 innings of shutout relief, striking out 2.

Brantford now has a day off before a full weekend of road baseball against the IBL's top teams,. On Friday the Red Sox visit the 2nd place Kitchener Panthers. Then on Saturday Brantford heads down the 401 to meet up with the 1st place London Majors. The Sox wrap up the weekend with a Sunday afternoon game in Toronto vs. the 3rd place Maple Leafs.

Brantford's next home game is Wednesday August 11th facing the Kitchener Panthers.  That kicks off a 4 game homestand for the Red Sox, advance tickets are available at brantfordredsox.com/tickets.
