Red Sox Extinguish Red Hot Baycats

by B. Young

BRANTFORD - Sunday's Red Sox game was a benefit for the Brantford Professional Firefighters Association, and fittingly the IBL's hottest team in the Barrie Baycats were in town. The Red Sox would have quite the challenge in trying to extinguish the red-hot Baycats, who had gone 10-1 in their last 11 games.

Things looked grim for Brantford in the beginning, with Sean Hood Tidman in a spot start allowing 7 runs (all earned) on 3 hits and 4 walks and not escaping the first inning. Aidan Armitage fared better in relief, finally getting Brantford out of the first inning (and holding down the fort until the 5th). Brantford's bats, no strangers to being down early in games this season, quickly responded back with a trio of runs in the bottom of the 1st, followed by 9 more (yes nine!) in the 2nd to take a 12-7 lead.

After a scoreless 3rd and 4th inning, the Baycats responded with a pair of runs in the 5th cutting the lead to 12-9. The Red Sox answered back with 6 runs, taking a more comfortable 18-9 lead into the 6th inning. Barrie roared right back however, scoring 5 runs off new Brantford reliever Kyle Nash to make it an 18-14 game. The Baycats would get one more run off Gabe Bruder before the Red Sox turned the game over Isaiah Ramos (in his first relief appearance this season). Ramos would safely close things out, pitching 2.2 innings of shutout baseball, and Brantford would add a pair of insurance runs to make it a 20-15 final score

Almost all of Brantford's batting order turned in a multi-hit performance in the win.  Matt Fabian and Gus Wilson led the way with 4 hits apiece. Aidan Armitage gets credited with the win, and Isaiah Ramos missed out on being credited with a save by one out.

This was Brantford's first home win of the season, and their first at Arnold Anderson Stadium since July 13, 2022. This was also Brantford’s first time scoring 20 runs since the 2012 season, where the Red Sox accomplished the feat 3 times.

Brantford is right back in action tomorrow night - Monday July 10 - going for 2 in a row hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs in a rainout makeup game, 8 pm first pitch at Arnold Anderson Stadium.
