Sox Drop 2nd Last Regular Season Game
The Brantford Red Sox travelled to London on Friday night to take on the 1st place Majors. This was Brantford's 2nd last game of the 2021 IBL regular season. Brantford is still fighting to move up in the IBL standings before the playoffs, and with 6 wins in their last 8 games they have made up much ground. A win over the first place Majors, although a tall order, would be a huge boost in their chances at a better postseason seeding.
Brantford made the most of a limited pitching staff on the evening, hanging in through 6 innings trailing 3-1. Unfortunately the "pennant champions" put up 7 in the 7th inning, and the final score was London 10 Brantford 3.
Liam Sutherland led the charge for Brantford with 3 hits. Nick Burdett hit a 2 run home run in the 9th inning, his 4th of the year. Junior callup Spencer Carrol pitched a clean 8th inning in his IBL debut, retiring the side on just 4 pitches.
The good news for Brantford is that the Hamilton Cardinals also lost on Friday, so both teams remain tied each with 11-18 records. Brantford holds the tiebreaker with Hamilton by virtue of their head-to-head season record of 4-1. So it all comes down to game 30 on Sunday - Brantford wraps up their regular season in Toronto taking on the Maple Leafs. A Brantford win clinches 6th place and a first round playoff matchup with the IBL's 3rd place team (still to be determined). Game time Sunday is 2 pm at Christie Pits.
