Red Sox vs. Welland - Game 2

by B. Young

BRANTFORD - The Brantford Red Sox hosted the Welland Jackfish on Friday night in game 2 of their playoff series. Despite this being the 2nd game, the series was tied 0-0 due to the pausing of Game 1 due to weather.

After a scoreless 1st, Welland got to Brantford starter Isaiah Ramos who had an uncharacteristically off inning. Ramos walked the first 2 Jackfish batters, then gave up 2 singles followed by.a bases clearing triple. By the time the Red Sox finally got their 3 outs they were down 5-0. But Brantford answered right back in the bottom of the inning, responding with a trio of runs. Ramos settled in after that, delivering 3 more scoreless innings. Unfortunately, that was the extent of the Red Sox scoring for the night and they went on to drop Game 2 by a score of  7-3.  Welland now leads the best of 5 series 1-0.

Christian Kuzemka and Nick Burdett led the way at the plate with 2 hits apiece (including Burdett's first triple since August 4, 2018). Brantford's lineup definitely missed the big bat of Matt Fabian (unable to make the game due to school committments) to light the fire, tallying just 6 total hits on the night. Jacob Lupton held the Red Sox in it with 3 innings of 1 run relief. Ramos was charged with the loss.

Game 1 of the series resumes in Welland Saturday at 6 pm, followed by Game 3. Brantford needs to win at least one the Saturday games to extend their season. Game 4, if necessary, will be back in Brantford on Sunday afternoon at 2 pm.
