Red Sox Wrap Season Series With Majors
LONDON - The Brantford Red Sox returned to Labatt Park in London on Friday for the second time in as many games. Their previous encounter with the Majors on Tuesday night was a largely forgettable affair - due in part to the game being a last minute rescheduled make up game, most of Brantford's regular players were unavailable and it showed on the scoresheet.
With their regular starting lineup back together Brantford got off to a better start on Friday night, matching their hit total from Tuesday (3) in the first inning alone. However, in somewhat typical fashion the Red Sox left the bases loaded. London, on the other hand, would bring their base runners home in the bottom of the inning and led 2-0 after the first.
Brantford would score courtesy of a Jon Dziomba solo home run in the 3rd inning. Dziomba would score again in the 6th inning, with London gladly trading a double play for the run. But as you may have guessed, a pair of runs was not going to be enough against the first place Majors. As has been the pattern, things got away from Brantford after 5 innings. The Red Sox gave up 20+ runs for just the first time this season, as the Majors took the opportunity to pad their stats. Final score was Brantford 4 London 20.
FOR BRANTFORD - Not that London's offence needs any assistance, but they certainly got it from Brantford's sloppy defence with 5 errors on the night. Early control problems for starter Bennett Moore allowed 3 runs scored on wild pitches. Also struggling with control, reliever Alex Gowing faced 14 batters (hitting 3) in the 6th inning while surrendering 9 runs. On a positive note, Nick Burdett celebrated another career milestone with tonight's game being his 300th in the IBL. Liam Sutherland led the way with 3 hits. Jon Dziomba's home run was his 2nd of the year. All of Brantford Red Sox batters reached base at least once. And Bennett Moore logged a season-high 7 strikeouts in his 5 innings pitched.
NEXT UP - The Red Sox are back at Arnold Anderson Stadium tomorrow night. As the regular season winds down, this is Brantford's last Saturday night home game. Be sure to get to the ballpark early for a pregame performance by Brantford's own Shaelee Sheppard starting at 7 pm.
