Sox Strike Out Against Leafs

by B. Young

BRANTFORD - The Brantford Red Sox wrapped up the home portion of their 2022 regular season Friday night hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs. In a game that had no implications for the final standings, Brantford still hoped to finish their disappointing regular season on a positive note and bring some forward momentum into the postseason.

Brantford and Toronto had a rare pitching and defensive duel for the first half of the game, with both teams holding each other scoreless through the first 4 innings. Each side managed just 2 baserunners during this time.

Scoring opened up in the 5th inning, with each side trading a pair of runs. Toronto would pull ahead 3-2 in the 6th inning, and step on the accelerator with a big 4 run 7th inning off of Brantford's bullpen to put things out of reach. The Red Sox managed another run in the 8th but it was too little, too late. Final score was Toronto 9 Brantford 3.

FOR BRANTFORD - Danny Howat had one of the best starts by a Brantford pitcher this season, and certainly did not deserve to be charged wth the loss. Howat delivered 6 solid innings, yielding just 3 runs on 5 hits while striking out 4. Plate discipline cost the Red Sox the game on this night, with Brantford batters combining for 17 strikeouts while walking 0 times. 5 of the Red Sox's 9 starting batters failed to reach base at all during the game. Nick Burdett led Brantford with 3 hits, while Evan Ryan and Andrew Gorecki each had a pair.

NEXT UP - Brantford wraps the regular season with a pair of road games. Saturday night the Sox are in Guelph at 7:30 pm in a game with huge postseason implications for the Royals, as they are still within reach of finishing first place in the standings. The regular season then finally concludes Sunday night at 7 pm in Barrie.
