Red Sox Wrap Opening Weekend

by B. Young

The Brantford Red Sox travelled to Toronto on Sunday for their third game of the young IBL season. With the Sox having only scored one run in each of their two first games, they hoped a trip to the hitter friendly confines of Christie Pits might change their fortunes.

Brantford struck first in the 4th inning, with Nick Burdett bringing home Liam Sutherland. Roger Keen would follow up by bringing home Shamil Ubiera. Brantford starter Yunior Yambatis would experience some control issues in the bottom of the inning however, with some passed balls and a walk leading to Toronto getting the pair of runs back plus one. Brantford trailed Toronto 3-2 after 4 innings.

Christie Pits did not live up to its run-friendly reputation today and that score would surprisingly hold, with the Maple Leafs earning the 3-2 victory.

Yunior Yambatis was charged with the loss, surrendering 3 runs on 4 hits. Brian Lui and Luca Lombardi each pitched an inning of scoreless relief.

Also notable: Jacob Reid, back behind the plate for the first time since the 2019 playoffs but not missing a beat, threw out the first stolen base attempt by Toronto on the afternoon.

Brantford now gets some time off to regroup- our next game is this Friday May 27, hosting the Kitchener Panthers in a rematch of last season's playoff quarterfinals. Game time is  8 pm at Arnold Anderson Stadium for Brant Community Healthcare System appreciation night - BCHS employees get half-off admission by showing their work ID.
