2019 Season Preview

by Bryan Young

The Brantford Red Sox head into the 2019 Intercounty Baseball League season sporting a new look.  Team owner Rick Pomerleau notes "The upcoming season for the Brantford Red Sox is looking good. But it is not the same team that the fans have watched the previous 2 years of our ownership.  We have returning veteran players in Nick Burdett (2018 Team MVP), Matt McGovern, Andris Risquez, Anthony Risquez and Blake Kauer to help lead the way.  Many of our other veterans have either retired or moved on to another team."   Graham Tebbit and Nate DeSouza will also be out this season with injuries.

This new look for the Red Sox starts at the top, with the 2019 team being led by Field Manager Kevin Hussey and Assistant Coach Bill Matetich.    Other new additions to the team include:

Corey Saunders - 29 year old right handed pitcher, from Wyoming, Ontario.  Most recently played with the Wyoming Cattlebarons of the Western Counties Senior Baseball League.  In 2017 Corey posted a 1.92 ERA with 38 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched

Touré Parpit-Sinclair - 23 year old outfielder, from Pickering, Ontario. Most recently spent 2016-2018 with the Guelph Royals. Touré posted a.319 batting average in 69 plate appearances over 25 total games played with Guelph.

Chris Iltshishin - 22 year old infielder, from Waterloo Ontario.  Appeared in 10 games with the Kitchener Panthers in 2018, posting a .238 average with 5 hits and 1 home run over 21 at bats.

Michael Bannon - Left handed pitcher.  2016 Carleton University Baseball Pitcher of the Year.  Associate Baseball Coach with The Baseball Zone

Fernando Suarez - Catcher.  Most recently played with OSBA champion Whitby Chiefs, posting a .444 average and earning both league all-star and rookie of the year honours.  Signed with the Durham Lords for the 2019-2020 college season.

Mike Bruder - Right handed pitcher

Mike Mueller - Right handed pitcher

Further additions are expected once the college & university school year finishes.   The Sox also previously announced the signing of 4 new import players, pitchers Victor Mueses, Abel De Los Santos, Edison Frias, and shortstop Luis Perez, whose arrival is anticipated later this month.

Pomerleau says "Field Manager Kevin Hussey and Coach Bill Matetich played an important part in finding a lot of these new players. Both have worked very hard with myself over the winter months to put this team together. We are very excited about this younger team this year."

Some members of the new roster played in the Red Sox's season opening win in Toronto on Sunday.  The Brantford Red Sox open their season at home this Sunday, May 12th hosting the Welland Jackfish.  More details of the home opener's festivities will be released later this week.
