Kitchener Panthers at Brantford Red Sox

May 26, 2019 - Arnold Anderson Stadium

The Brantford Red Sox hosted the Kitchener Panthers for the first time this season, in a rematch of last year's IBL Playoffs opening round matchup.

Brady Cappe took the mound in his Brantford Red Sox debut.  Also making their first appearance for Brantford were Luis Perez at shortstop, and Austin Wilkie in centre field.

Brantford led off the scoring in the 2nd inning when Nick Burdett, Jeff Fishbaum, and Chris Iltshishin all singled to load the bases, then Matt McGovern drove in Burdett on a fielders choice.  Nick Zarzycki  then walked, but the Sox unfortunately left the bases loaded.  1-0 Brantford after 2 innings.

Kitchener quickly responded in the 3rd inning, capitalizing on a Sox error and eventually plating 4 runs. 4-1 Kitchener after 3 innings.

Game would remain scoreless until the 6th inning.  Wilkie hit a leadoff double for the Sox, then was moved over to 3rd on a Fernando Suarez single. Jesse Fishbaum then drove in Wilkie.  Sox cut the deficit to 4-2 heading into the 7th inning.

After a scoreless 7th, Brantford would even things up in the 8th.  Perez advanced to first on an error, then Wilkie continued to impress with a 2 run home run.  Game was tied 8-8 heading into the 9th inning, and after blanks by both teams Brantford was heading into extra innings for the second time already in this young season.

Brantford threatened to finish things off in the 10th, when Wilkie doubled and then Burdett was given an intentional walk.  Unfortunately they were left stranded, and the game entered the 11th inning still tied 4-4.

Kitchener finally broke the deadlock in the 11th, scoring 1.  Brantford needed 1 to tie and 2 to win, but unfortunately could not convert.  Sox dropped their second extra innings game this season, final score 5-4.

Austin Wilkie was the standout on offence for the Sox with 2 doubles and a home run, 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs.  And Anthony Rizquez single-handedly made a spectacular double play in the 4th inning, snagging a line drive and then quickly tagging out 2 Kitchener base runners.
