Sox Go Streaking In Hamilton

by B. Young

On Monday night the Brantford Red Sox, winners of 2 straight games, headed down the 403 to take on the Hamilton Cardinals. This was a make up game of the previous rainout on August 1. As the 2021 IBL regular season winds down Brantford has a challenging stretch of 5 games in 6 days, with this being game 2.

With both teams coming off hard fought wins on a hot Sunday afternoon it wasn't surprising that tonight's game started off a bit slowly at the plate. In the 3rd inning an impressive relay from Mike Deluca to Nick Burdett cut down a Hamilton runner at the plate, ending the inning and preventing the first run of the game.

Brantford finally broke through in the 5th. Mike Deluca stole 2nd after a leadoff single, and then was brought home by Zach Lampreia. Liam Sutherland then brought home Spencer Voisin on a fielder's choice to give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead.

Deluca added some insurance in the 7th with a solo blast to left field, his first of the year. That opened the floodgates, as the Sox would load the bases for Nick Burdett who followed up his 2 home runs yesterday with a grand slam. Brantford sent 14 batters to the plate and took a 10-0 lead into the 7th inning stretch.

You can't count out the comeback Cards however, as they just overcame a 10-1 deficit yesterday to beat Welland. Hamilton capitalized on a trio of Brantford errors to score 3 in the bottom of the 7th. Brantford answered back with 8 runs in the 8th however to put this one out of reach. Your Brantford Red Sox win their third in a row by a final score of 18 to 3.

Every member of the Brantford starting lineup reached base at least once, and the Red Sox batted around in both the 7th and 8th innings. Brantford starter Mike Mueller, after earning the save yesterday afternoon in Toronto, went 6 innings striking out 8 while allowing 0 runs on 5 hits to earn the win.

Brantford gets a much deserved day off on Tuesday before playing 3 games in 3 days:

  • Wednesday August 25 vs. Welland Jackfish, 8 pm at Arnold Anderson Stadium
  • Thursday August 26 at Welland Jackfish, 7:30 pm at Welland Stadium
