Brantford Breaks Through On Sunday

by B. Young

On Sunday afternoon the Brantford Red Sox hosted the Hamilton Cardinals for their first day game this season. The Sox were hoping that playing in front of a matinee crowd at Arnold Anderson Stadium would help change their fortunes, as they continued to look for their first win in the young IBL season.

Things started off slowly for the Red Sox, as they were hitless through 4 innings with Hamilton holding a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the 5th inning Brantford's bats finally broke through, with a trio of singles by Colton Fountain, Jesse Fishbaum, and Mike Deluca. Gianfranco Morello then delivered with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 2-1 after 5 innings.

Hamilton roared right back and scored 3, and the Red Sox matched it with a 3 runs of their own thanks again to a trio of Fountain/Fishbaum/Deluca hits to cut Hamilton's lead to 5-4 after 6 innings.

The Red Sox would not be denied on this hot sunny day however. They scored twice more in the 7th courtesy of a Morello single/stolen base combo, and a Nick Burdett hit by pitch, with Liam Sutherland driving both runners home. Zach Lampreia brought home Fishbaum in the 8th to tack on an insurance run, and Brantford secured the 7-5 victory.

Brantford starter Adam Jafine went a 6 solid innings in his first start for the Sox, striking out 5 and yielding just 2 earned runs. Nick Davies earned the win in relief, tossing 3 scoreless innings.  Brantford's bats were led by Jesse Fishbaum with 3 hits, 2 runs scored and an RBI. Colton Fountain and Mike Deluca each had a pair of hits and a run scored also.

Brantford has a trio of games this upcoming week:

  • Tuesday July 20 at Kitchener Panthers, 7:30 pm at Jack Couch Park
  • Friday July 23 hosting the Hamilton Cardinals, 8 pm at Arnold Anderson Stadium
