Red Sox Make It 2 In A Row In Toronto

by B. Young

Last Friday night the Brantford Red Sox defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs in walk off fashion. Brantford followed this week’s Friday night walk off with a rematch vs. Toronto on Sunday afternoon at Christie Pits.

Brantford jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the first, thanks in part to Nick Burdett’s first home run of the season. The Sox doubled up in the 3rd extending their lead to 4-0, and would make it 5-0 in the 5th thanks to Burdett’s 2nd blast of the day.

No lead is safe at Christie Pits however, and Toronto cut the lead to 5-3 after 5 innings.  Brantford showed no quit though and scored a pair of insurance runs  in the 7th to take a 7-3 lead into the 7th inning stretch.

Toronto threatened in the 8th, loading the bases and Brantford was happy to escape yielding only 1 run. The Sox took a 7-4 lead into the 9th inning. The Leafs got one more in the bottom of the 9th but the Sox hung on for the 7-5 win.

Brantford starter Adam Jafine went 8 innings for the win, striking out 7 and holding the IBL’s best-hitting team to just 4 runs on 7 hits. Mike Mueller earned the save in relief.  Nick Burdett led Brantford with 4 hits on the day including 2 home runs. Gianfranco Morello, Mike Deluca, and Jacob Reid each had a pair of hits.
