Red Sox Return to the Royal City

by B. Young

On Saturday, the Brantford Red Sox returned to Guelph for the first time since July 2019. The Royals are back in the lBL after a two year absence, having opted out of playing last season combined with the entire league suspending operations in 2020.

Guelph has assembled a formidable lineup for their return to the league, with IBL all-time hits and home run leader Sean Reilly, previous members of the Barrie Baycats championship teams Claudio Custodio, Emilis Guerrero, and Kyle Degrace, and former Toronto Blue Jay Dalton Pompey.

Brantford unfortunately went into Guelph with an extremely depleted pitching staff - most notably, Saturday starter Hayden Stam had just pitched in relief on Friday night. Guelph's big bats didn't hesitate to capitalize on this, with 5 home runs on the day. The Red Sox managed to hang in there until the late innings, but were ultimately outmatched by the Royals' firepower in a 10-4 final.

For Brantford, Shamil Ubiera led off the 2nd inning with a single. He was then moved over by Nick Burdett and brought in by Spencer Jamieson. Jamieson, with 2 hits on the day, has been doing a remarkable job as a Jr. call-up, playing in every game so far. Jon Dziomba, who subbed in for another Jr. call-up Evan Ryan in the 3rd inning, immediately made an impact with a 2 run blast over the right field fence. Liam Sutherland also contributed a pair of hits and a run scored. And Burdett had a lead off double and ultimately scored in the 9th, in a last ditch effort to rally by Brantford.

Brantford wraps up their busy 3 games in 3 days stretch hosting the defending IBL champion London Majors on Sunday, Game time is 2 pm at Arnold Anderson Stadium, the first home day game of the season. Tickets are available at the gate, or in advance at brantfordredsox.com/tickets.
