Red Sox Earn First Win of the Season and Complete Weekend Comeback Thriller

by Abhinav Nongmeikapam

The Brantford Red Sox showed resilience, determination, and plenty of fight over the weekend, bouncing back from a tough opening loss to secure their first win of the 2026 season before capping the weekend with a dramatic ninth-inning comeback victory on the road.

Friday: Strong Pitching Effort Falls Short in Hamilton

The Red Sox opened the weekend in Hamilton on May 29, dropping a hard-fought 2-0 decision to the Cardinals.

Despite the loss, Brantford's pitching staff delivered an impressive performance. Leandro Mejia struck out three over 2.2 innings, while Colbey Klepper was outstanding in relief, tossing 4.1 scoreless innings and recording seven strikeouts.

At the plate, Nick Iannantone led the offense with two hits, while Jakob Cantor, Tim Holyk, and Andrew Savage each contributed a hit of their own. The Red Sox matched Hamilton with five hits but were unable to capitalize on their opportunities as the Cardinals pushed across two runs in the third inning and held on for the win.

While the result wasn't what Brantford wanted, the pitching staff's performance provided plenty of positives heading into the home opener the following day.

Saturday: Red Sox Capture First Win of 2026

Back at Arnold Anderson Stadium on May 30, the Red Sox broke through for their first victory of the season with a 5-3 win over the Hamilton Cardinals.

After a scoreless battle through much of the game, Brantford's offense came alive with 12 hits and timely run production.

Jakob Cantor put together a standout performance, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Nick Iannantone continued his hot start by also collecting three hits and driving in a run. Brody Black delivered two RBIs, and Cassidy Watt chipped in with a pair of hits.

The pitching staff once again played a major role in the victory. Nicholai Arbach, Anthony Porcellato, Jorge De La Cruz, and Connor Irvine combined to limit Hamilton's offense. Irvine was especially dominant, throwing four scoreless innings while striking out seven batters to secure the win.

The victory marked an important milestone for the club as the Red Sox celebrated their first win of the season in front of the home crowd.

Sunday: Ninth-Inning Heroics Complete the Weekend

The Red Sox saved their most dramatic performance for Sunday afternoon in Chatham-Kent.

Facing a 4-2 deficit entering the ninth inning against the Barnstormers, Brantford refused to quit.

After battling back to put runners on base, Tim Holyk delivered the biggest swing of the weekend. The first baseman launched a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning, helping erase the deficit and propel the Red Sox to an incredible 5-4 comeback victory.

Holyk finished a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a double, leading the offensive charge. Nick Iannantone added two hits, while Christian Ortega contributed a pair of hits of his own.

On the mound, Haldon Craig, Jordis Ramos, Jose Arias, and Leandro Mejia combined for 11 strikeouts. Mejia shut the door in the final inning, striking out two batters and preserving the comeback win.

The victory secured Brantford's second consecutive win and gave the club a winning 2-1 record over the weekend.
